How to access:
Clear all of the Event stages (except the Co-Op LV 70 stage, which is optional). This will give you access to the CHAOS stage.

Fight Overview & Team building

This is a much-dreaded event based on the reaction it received from JP players, and it’s easy to see why. But, with some knowledge about how to tackle the fight, it can certainly be 100% completed without Arciela or any of the featured characters at all.

Recommended:

  • Arciela. Don’t blame me, the fight was tailor-made for her. If she is not in your team or as a friend, then…
  • Delayers or turn manipulators, to minimize the amount of times you need to deal with the horrible attack from the last wave.
  • Without Arciela, bring characters who can quickly set up again after having all buffs dispelled.
  • Debuff cleansers like Yuna or Yuffie, since debuff prevention will not work for the last wave.
  • Healers or damage mitigators to deal with the high HP damage both waves.
  • Debuffers work well if they have enframed debuffs, which will prevent the bosses from buffing themselves. Generic debuffers suffer if you have no other way to prevent or remove the bosses’ enframed buffs.
  • Dispellers are great to deal with their generic and enframed buffs.

Avoid:

  • Characters who rely on building buff stacks to reach their full power, if you don’t have Arciela in the team;
  • Characters with :dark: attacks, resisted in the first wave.

Summon options:

  • Any, as long as you don’t summon Diabolos in the first wave.
  • Ifrit and Pandemonium can exploit elemental weakness in the second wave.

Enrage: No. They do not power up when the first one dies.

The warm-up wave is very simple compared to the main boss fight, but can still be quite dangerous. These enemies can deal a high amount of HP damage regardless of being broken or not, thanks to Candle in the Wind (which sets their BRV to a fixed value before the attack). And with their generic ATK buff up, Candle can deal almost 10k damage.

Thankfully, they always telegraph that attack with “Brazenly it smirks” in the preceding turn. When you see that warning, make sure their target has enough HP to survive the attack, or use any other measures you can to mitigate the damage (Blind, evasion, ATK down debuffs, HP damage reduction skills, etc). Candle in the Wind also favors targeting your party member with the highest MAX HP, so if you have someone with passives that allow them to survive lethal attacks with 1 HP (like Y’shtola, Dark Knight Cecil or Aerith) you can unequip Max HP passives from your other team members to make sure the right person is targeted.

Another interesting feature about Candle in the Wind is that it is apparently treated like an :group: attack by the game, even though it only damages one character. So it can be counterattacked by the likes of Shadow, Wakka and Eight, even if the bosses target someone else, as shown in this video by Macilento.

Dispelling or debuffing these foes works well to lower the risk of a surprise KO, but other than the high HP damage, the first wave is not a major concern in this fight.

The first thing you need to understand about these bosses is that they work with stances. They have 3 possible stances, and certain attacks only happen in some of them:

Regular stance (no aura):

The least dangerous stance, where they have access to their regular attacks except Cross Edge+, Hit High Wind and Gluttony Sickle. They will always return to this state and spend a couple turns in it after ending one of the others. They can switch from this to the Starving or Attack Signal stances, but only one of them can be “Starving” at a time.

Starving (grey aura):

This aura begins when you see “Starving…” on the screen. When that happens, their next attack will ALWAYS be Gluttony Sickle, unless you force them to waste a turn with either Arciela’s second skill (Disabling HP attacks) or Porom’s Cry (25% chance to cause Confuse). After one turn, they go back to the regular stance; that is why Arciela or Porom force them to use a different attack, since Gluttony Sickle requires them to be “starving”.

Attack Signal (red aura):

This aura begins when you see “Attack Signal” on the screen, and the Mantis starts glowing red. When that happens, their ATK is increased and some of their regular moves become much more dangerous. Cross Edge becomes Cross Edge+ and High Wind becomes Hit High Wind. Both become more dangerous and add follow-up :hp: attacks. The stance lasts for 2 turns only, and both can be in this state at the same time.

With all that said, this fight really revolves around Gluttony Sickle. It’s the most loaded boss attack we have ever seen in the game:

  • It dispels all buffs your party has, including enframed;
  • it cannot be avoided by Blindness/evasion/etc, since it is a guaranteed hit;
  • it throws 5 enframed buffs on the mantis, pushing off most of the debuffs you might have applied and protecting against new ones;
  • it applies the very nasty enframed Fluke debuff, which becomes increasingly worse if you allow the stacks to accumulate;
  • and it is a group BRV + HP attack, which can inflict serious damage if your party gets broken and cannot be mitigated by any buffs since they dispel you before attacking.

How to deal with this attack?

  • Bring Arciela (in your team or as a friend) and, when you see a Mantis enter the “Starving” grey aura stance, use her Descension & Sight Unseen skill to silence their HP attacks for 2 turns. This will force them to skip it completely. Porom’s confuse could also do it, but it’s only a 25% chance of working. Arciela makes this fight much much easier, so you don’t need to worry with the rest of the advice.
  • Bring delayers or turn manipulators to stop the Starving mantis from attacking. Since only one can be in the “Starving” stance at a time, this will also stop the other one. And while Starving the mantis has reduced DEF and SPD, making it easier to capitalize on those turns to deal a lot of damage.
  • Bring dispellers (like Vanille or Faris) to remove their enframed buffs, or Yuffie to stop them from gaining any buffs with her EX.
  • Bring cleansers like Yuna or Yuffie to remove the Fluke debuff (since the debuffs cannot be prevented by Lenna/Ignis/Selphie, because their protection is dispelled first).
  • Bring characters who can set up again quickly after being dispelled. Those who rely on building buff stacks, like Ramza or Snow, will suffer more due to having to restart from zero. (Not all characters have that problem – Penelo or Onion Knight, for example, continue at their previous stack number when reapplying their buffs.)

Is Arciela necessary to complete this fight?

Absolutely not.

While the event was clearly designed to make her shine, it is certainly not the only manner to beat the fight with all objectives met. Even some very unorthodox teams have completed it without including Arciela.
